North Carolina's dominant progressive foveal dystrophy: how progressive is it?
نویسندگان
چکیده
We studied 34 family members at risk of having dominant progressive foveal dystrophy of Lefler, Wadsworth, and Sidbury (also called North Carolina macular dystrophy) and found 17 to be affected. Fifteen of these affected subjects were observed over at least a 10-year period for evidence of progressive macular degeneration. Only one subject showed objective evidence of progressive deterioration in only one eye. Our findings further substantiate that this dystrophy generally has a stable course, contrary to its original description.

Occult Macular Dystrophy
Occult macular dystrophy is an inherited macular dystrophy characterized by a progressive decline of bilateral visual acuity with normal fundus appearance, fluorescein angiogram and full-field electroretinogram. This case report presents a 20-year-old female patient with bilateral progressive decline of visual acuity for six years. Her visual acuity was 3-4/10 in both eyes. Anterior segment and...

AIM To characterise the phenotype and identify the underlying genetic defect in a family with deafness segregating with a North Carolina-like macular dystrophy (NCMD). METHODS Details of the family were obtained from the Moorfields Eye Hospital genetic clinic database and comprised eight affected, four unaffected members, and two spouses. Pedigree data were collated and leucocyte DNA extracte...
متن کاملProgressive conduction disturbance in myotonic dystrophy.
Myotonic dystrophy (DM), the commonest dystrophy in adults, is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by a variety of multisystemic features. Two main genetically distinct forms of DM have been identified: type 1 (DM1), the classic form first described by Steinert, and type 2 (DM2), identified by Ricker. DM1 is caused by trinucleotide expansion of cytosine- -thymine-guanine (CTG) in the my...
متن کاملA new macular dystrophy with anomalous vascular development, pigment spots, cystic spaces, and neovascularization.
OBJECTIVE To clinically phenotype an inherited macular dystrophy with peculiar intraretinal pigment spots, cysts, and hemorrhage in a 24-year-old female proband and her family. METHODS Extended family members of the proband underwent dilated fundus examination, optical coherence tomography, and, in selected cases, fluorescein angiography and electroretinography. RESULTS Seventeen family mem...
متن کاملMultifocal electroretinography in patients with Stargardt's macular dystrophy.
AIMS To describe the topography of multifocal electroretinograms (ERGs) and to explore its diagnostic value in patients with Stargardt's macular dystrophy (SMD). METHODS 51 patients with SMD were examined by means of the m-sequence technique to characterise the topography of electroretinographic responses in the central visual field. The results were compared with data from 30 normal voluntee...
